Exploring the CURE: A Symposium on Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences

Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) have been developing since at least 2000 at the University of British Columbia. To date, a dedicated UBC forum to explore these innovative courses has not been established. We would like to spearhead this effort at UBC by hosting a symposium bringing together educators sharing interests in CUREs.

After the Ban: Continuing Conversations on Discrimination and Marginalization at UBC

When the first travel ban in the United States was implemented in January 2017 a number of faculty, staff and students got together to discuss possible responses by UBC. We are organizing this session to discuss how we can continue to address concerns about racism, Islamophobia, anti-semitism, anti-immigration, transphobia and other issues of discrimination and marginalization that have been raised for many in the UBC community in recent months.

Replacing Connect & What To Expect Next

The Process of Replacing Connect & What To Expect Next Since last summer, UBC has undertaken an extensive consultation and evaluation process to determine how the UBC Learning Technology Environment needs to change to better support teaching and learning. These results have been used to select the application that sits at the core of our Learning Technology Environment. In this panel-style presentation, faculty and staff from the Learning Technology Environment Renewal team will discuss these engagement and evaluation activities, and share what they learned through the process. There will also be time to ask questions about the project directly to the project team.

Creating Emotional Connections with Technology

The key element in student engagement is the affective connection with learning elements and materials. The lightboard is ideally suited for creating this connection, a consequence of the eye contact of the presenter with the viewer. Examples of lightboard presentation techniques will demonstrate this strong connection and how the lightboard can be used as the ideal vehicle for students as producers.

Best Practices in Teaching Science Communication

The ComPAIR Project: Student Experiences with a New Teaching Technology

This presentation introduces ComPAIR, an innovative peer-feedback and teaching technology being developed at UBC. Participants will engage with the application hands-on to learn about this new way to integrate comparison and peer feedback into other modes of teaching. We will then review the results of an extended assessment of student experience with ComPAIR through three pilot courses in English, Physics and Math at UBC.

Student Evaluation of Teaching (SEoT) summary statistics are going through a transition and a new Integrated Reporting tool is now implemented. The Reporting Tool will be accessible to department heads and directors. If you are involved in using the results for evaluating instructors in your program, come to this session to learn about the steps that have been taken, what the reporting tool looks like and the statistics reported.

TLEF Showcase

Transforming Learning Spaces

In 2016, UBC opened a new academic facility called Orchard Commons that combines living, learning, and working spaces and offers an opportunity to rethink learning space design based on a more holistic view of the student experience. At this session, we will share our design approaches, give virtual tours of some of these classrooms, and discuss the themes that emerged from this process. The importance of flexibility, collaborative peer learning and group work, and open spaces that encouraged active engagement emerged as key drivers to this classroom design initiative. In a group exercise, participants will also explore and share ideas about how they might change their teaching in an active learning classroom.

Building Digital Literacies: Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

Wikipedia-based assignments can engage students in an authentic learning experience that involves open collaboration, critical thinking, and knowledge building for a global audience. This hands-on edit-a-thon will cover the basics of Wikipedia editing and will involve adding citations and new content to Wikipedia.
