New faculty are invited to attend this orientation session to learn about the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund (TLEF), created in 1991 to enrich UBC students’ learning experience. In this session, you will receive information about the TLEF criteria and application process, including tips on writing your proposal, developing your budget, and designing evaluation strategies.

Using Active Learning

In this session, drawing from both Experiential Learning Theory and Transformative Learning Theory, we will explore how to incorporate active learning in your teaching that connects students in your classes to the discipline they are learning. You will leave with a few concrete approaches to use to help engage your learners as novice disciplinary practitioners, and a more general understanding of active learning you can use to transform your approach to lesson design.

Sharing and Rethinking Approaches to Assessment

Writing Across the Curriculum+ (WAC+) is back with its second installment of the Best Practices in Teaching Science Communication roundtable symposium. Educators engage participants in short presentations around effective and innovating teaching methods being used at UBC. Participants cycle between tables and sample a range of teaching practices. Take away new ideas for your courses, expand your UBC network in teaching and learning, and gain new perspectives from your colleagues. This symposium will include teaching and learning using podcasting, peer-review, wikis, infographics, and more.

Here, by introducing you to an open sourced card game (http://phylogame.org), you will be guided throughout the day in the pursuit of designing your own analog game (card or board) that will highlight your chosen learning objectives. Along the way, you’ll immerse yourself in game-based learning and hackathon principles.

What is inclusive design and why do you think we should care about inclusive learning and teaching? In this interactive session we will explore teaching approaches that address the needs of our learners, considering the full range of their diversity with respect to culture, ability, gender, language and other forms of difference. We will also discuss strategies that contribute to an overall inclusive learning environment in which students feel equally valued and have equal opportunities to learn.
